CTS1100™

Coating Thickness Testing System

Today’s increasingly complex devices demand tight tolerances and clearances. Because low-friction, hydrophilic coatings swell when hydrated, coating thickness and its effect on overall part diameter is a critical variable in the design of today’s catheters, introducers, delivery systems and guidewires. The CTS1100 employs a precision LED micrometer to accurately measure the diameter of a part before coating, dry after coating and with the coating hydrated to accurately provide a total picture of the effect of the coating on part diameter. It’s able to measure, record and display part diameter via spot check, programmed locations or via continuous scan over the coated part length, up to 60 cm; automatically compensating for small variations in the sample position, making testing convenient and simple.

How It Works

Simply insert your sample (up to 65 cm long) into the attachment fixture. Select a saved test protocol or create a new one with Harland’s intuitive TestingWorks software. Let the CTS1100 do the rest. The sample is lowered past the sensor with diameter readings taken as it moves. At the end of this motion, the sample is completely immersed in a water bath. As the sample returns up a hydrated measurement is immediately taken as it leaves the water bath. The graphical display shows the dry and hydrated scans side-by-side and the calculated coating thickness throughout the process in real time. Once completed you can easily export your data via USB.

CTS1100 Dryout Time

Dryout Time

For intermittent and other self-administered catheters, the CTS1100 is also capable of efficiently measuring dryout time.  Performing dryout testing on coated samples can be tedious requiring multiple samples to measure the coating performance after removal from the hydrating fluid. The CTS can display the change in coating thickness over time. After determining the minimum coating thickness that provides adequate lubricity, dryout testing becames fast and simple.

Multiple Scanning Modes

The CTS1100 offers multiple scanning modes (spot check, programmed locations or continuous scan) allowing users to select the mode that best suits their needs. Measurements can be recorded at select points on the test sample or the CTS1100 can scan an entire programmed length.

Measure Uncoated, Dry or Hydrated

The CTS1100 can measure diameter uncoated, coated and dry or coated and hydrated. The removeable device fixture makes it convenient to measure an uncoated part, coat in a compatible Harland coater and place back on the CTS1100 in the same orientation for subsequent dry and hydrated measurements.
