San José, January 22, 2025. Harland Medical Systems, a company dedicated to the development and production of specialized coatings for the medical device industry, will begin operations in Costa Rica in 2025.

The Minnesota-headquartered company will establish its new facility in The Green Park Free Zone, in Alajuela, becoming the first company to offer hydrophilic coating for the medical industry in the country, which represents a strategic service for the MedTech sector.

“Harland is thrilled to expand our operations to Costa Rica, enabling us to better support our customers at every stage of their coating journey. We are eager to embrace the rich culture, dynamic workforce, and fresh perspectives that Costa Rica brings. This investment marks an exciting step toward serving even more customers worldwide with the same dedication and even greater capacity in the near future.” said Jon Anderson, Founder and CEO of Harland Medical.

The company plans to begin operations in July, with the possibility of expansion in the coming years. The new facility will offer dedicated high-performance coatings services, as well as local medical equipment maintenance and support, complementing the company’s recent investments in Ireland and Israel.

“We welcome Harland Medical Systems and hope that its history in Costa Rica is full of success and opportunities for its operation and for many Costa Ricans. This is an example of the companies that trust our country, not only for the capacity we have in the medical device industry, but also because they come to interact in a robust ecosystem of more than 90 companies from service providers for the value chain to top-level manufacturing,” said the Minister of Foreign Trade, Manuel Tovar.

“The arrival of Harland Medical Systems in the country represents a new boost to the medical devices sector, which leads Costa Rican exports with 44% of the total. This investment is the result of our solid value proposition, backed by a long track record in the sector and other high-value incentives. These elements position Costa Rica as a strategic ally for medical technology companies seeking a competitive environment to boost their operations,” said Laura López, General Manager of the Costa Rican Foreign Trade Promotion Agency (PROCOMER).

The facility that Harland Medical Systems will develop in the country is designed for high-volume production and will serve to supply various key sectors of the medical industry, such as neurology, cardiology, ophthalmology, urology, orthopedics, among others.

“Our country combines essential factors for the technological innovation of these companies, such as talent, infrastructure and sustainability. These elements have led us to become a benchmark country for the medical industry in terms of foreign investment and exports, which have become the main product we send to the world,” concluded López.
